COUNTDOWN WAITANGI GIVEN GREEN LIGHT
15 April 2015: Countdown has announced today that its Waitangi supermarket will re-open, after signing a new long-term lease with the freehold land owner, Te Tii (Waitangi) B3 Trust (TTB3 Trust).
The Trust acquired the supermarket building this week after a lengthy negotiation with the site’s former head lessee.
Acting Countdown Managing Director, Steve Donohue, says: “We are extremely pleased that such a great result has been achieved. This is great news for our team, the local community and our Countdown customers.”
“The Trust has been instrumental in making sure Countdown is able to provide a full-service supermarket for the local communities of Waitangi, Paihia, Russell and rural areas nearby
“I’d like to thank everyone involved at the Trust, particularly the Board, staff, and its Chairman who have done a tremendous job bringing the parties together and negotiating this positive outcome.”
Trust Chairman, Mr Wiremu Tane, says: “Being able to get Countdown back onto the Waitangi site had been the primary goal of ours since they were forced to stop trading late last year.”
“The Trust beneficiaries have provided dedicated support to ensure the opportunity was not lost, with all visualising a bright future for commercial enterprise ahead.
“We are really pleased to be able to make this announcement together and are looking forward to the store being back up and running soon.”
The Waitangi store is expected to be open to customers from late May after a refit and will employ approximately 25 team members.
